In this episode of the DudeCast, the host, co-founder of Patch Dudes, shares three key lessons he wishes he knew before starting his business. He emphasizes the importance of understanding your “why”- your ultimate goal and motivation beyond just making money. For him, it’s about freedom: the ability to wake up excited every day and build something meaningful with a team while providing opportunities for others. He also stresses the need to clearly define your target demographic before launching a business. Knowing exactly who your ideal customers are helps shape marketing, sales, pricing, and the overall customer experience, avoiding wasted effort on a product or service with little demand.
The final lesson, and perhaps the most unconventional, is to avoid starting a business in a trade you’re the best at. While it may seem counterintuitive, relying on your own technical skills can pull you away from the bigger picture of running and growing a company. Instead, hire experts to handle the craft, while you focus on operations, strategy, and scaling. By stepping back from the hands-on work, you allow the business to grow without becoming bottlenecked by your own involvement.
Today, Patch Dudes brings these lessons to life by providing drywall, painting, and other services, throughout the Greater Toronto Area- always delivering quality work you can trust.
